Equality + Podcasts

Feminist button.jpg

It's no secret that women have been historically underrepresented in the media, arts, politics, sports, news, THE WORLD, etc. And while that representation is shifting and it’s great (yay for Wonder Woman opening this weekend and for female superheroes!) - it’s important to remember that SOME representation is not the same as EQUAL representation.

The stories we hear and identify with shape who we are, and for obvious reasons, representation and diversity in these stories matter.

Prompted by Jude Kelly's Ted Talk: "Women should tell the stories of humanity' a couple of months ago I asked you to recommend your favourite (intersectional) female-hosted podcasts.

As promised, here's a list of some of the ones I've listened to and love:

- Magic Lessons
- Art For Your Ear
- Girl Gang Conversations

- Note To Self

- With Friends Like These
- Rachel Maddow Show
- Call Your Girlfriend

True Crime:
- My Favourite Murder

Pop Culture/sex/romance/race:
- 2 Dope Queens

Thank you so much for your recommendations! I haven't been able to listen to all of them. If you want to refer back to the original post, feel free to browse more recommendations in the comments.

More proof why this matters, type on your phone the word CEO, doctor, teacher and see what emoji is suggested. I hope one day we can see this
instead of this πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’Ό πŸ‘¨β€βš•οΈ πŸ‘¨β€πŸ« πŸ†

Also, for those sensitive to the word 'equality' - this doesn't mean we're stripping away men or anyone from their rights. It's not pie 🍰There's space for everyone. Equality means 'being equal in status, rights, and opportunities.'

This is only for podcasts, but imagine how powerful this would be if we applied this to everything: books, movies, businesses...πŸ™ŒπŸΏπŸ™ŒπŸΎπŸ™ŒπŸ½πŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸ™ŒπŸ»

Lastly, 'Do you believe that women can be a creative genius? Then please go forward and support women artists, buy their work, insist that their voices are heard, find platforms on which their voices will be made and remember this, if we're going to get past this moment in the world where we know what we're unequal, it's artists who have to imagine a different world.’ - Jude Kelly

Happy News, Giving Back + International Women's Day!

In Honour of International Women's Day:

We're happy to announce our partnership to support the Women's Health Collective, a non-profit women's organization servicing our community since 1971. They provide free medical services, counselling, professional guidance, yoga, pilates and acupuncture to any women regardless of age, race, culture, religion, sexual identity or sexual orientation.

We're donating 10% of all sales taking  place on Monday, March 6th and Tuesday, March 7th to the WHC, and, we're happy to announce other shops like Radical Buttons and El Kartel are also joining our efforts and donating part of their proceeds too!

But, International Women's Day
Is Not Till March 8th...

You're correct! The reason we are doing this two days early, is because on March 8th we're joining #DayWithoutAWoman, the International Women's Strike organized by the Women's March on Washington.

Anyone, anywhere, can join by making March 8th A Day Without a Woman, in one or all of the following ways:

  1. Women take the day off, from paid and unpaid labor

  2. Avoid shopping for one day (with exceptions for small, women- and minority-owned businesses)

  3. Wear RED in solidarity with A Day Without A Woman

Fight the Patriarchy with Self Love

Whether or not you participate in the A Day Without A Woman, there's something you can do today to fight for equality, and it starts with loving yourself!

Did you know 97% of grown women are unhappy with their bodies, and 73% think about their size or shape every single day?

I encourage you to gather your friends (male and female) and children, and watch the documentary Embrace - once you are done, pass it forward and encourage others to watch it!

Loving our bodies is not only a kind act, it is a powerful step towards becoming empowered female leaders. Can you imagine the things we could do -individually, and collectively- if we were comfortable in our own skin?

Thank you for being a part of our community and for shopping small.
We appreciate you and everything you do!

New Year's Announcement + Happy Things!

Happy New Year!

We hope you had a restful and fun holiday season, and wish you nothing but goodness and happy things for 2017!

We are happy to announce our shop is now open after a nice holiday break! To celebrate and say thank you, all of our pins (reg. $11.50 - $14.50) are back on sale for only $10 each AND our patches (regular $8) are on sale for $5!

We Believe in Giving Back

As always, all of our products support non-profits.

Because of you, last year (in less than 6 months!) we were able to help PB & Chi Dog Rescue, contributed to fund medical aid in Aleppo via The Compassion Collective (click here if you want to learn more and/or donate) and provided a scholarship gift to partially fund a young woman attending Girlvana Yoga Retreats.

Thank you for making this possible. We are excited to continue giving back in 2017!

Good News About 2016

Geoff Coates

Many of us can't wait to leave 2016 behind, and for good reason. Lots of crappy things happened all over the world last year. Geoff Coates' clever and humorous tribute to 2016 is likely one of my favourites.

But let's not get discouraged! Although 2016 was a challenging year, it's also been full of good things and good people. Here's a list of just a few positive things that happened last year.

Need more evidence? Here are two uplifting stories that will restore your faith in human kind!
